Air brake problems on a school bus, transit bus, or motorcoach are a put-it-out-of-service situation until diagnosed. Here’s how to identify what’s wrong and what to check first.

The compressor charges the air tanks. A worn compressor may not build pressure fast enough or at all. Often accompanied by oil in the air lines or excessive air dryer cycling.
Air lines crack with age and heat cycles. Fittings corrode. A single large leak can prevent pressure from building. Listen carefully at each wheel end and along air lines with engine at idle.
The diaphragm inside the brake chamber can rupture, causing a sudden air dump at that wheel. You’ll hear hissing from the wheel area and lose braking on that corner.
The air dryer removes moisture from compressed air. A failed desiccant cartridge passes moisture into the system, which freezes in cold weather and corrodes valves and chambers.
Automatic slack adjusters keep brakes properly adjusted. A seized or failed adjuster causes dragging brakes, uneven wear, and brake fade on one corner.
Spring brakes require air pressure to release. If a spring brake won’t release, check air pressure in the supply circuit and the park brake control valve before suspecting a seized chamber.
